This week has been exhausting, but good! I think I can say that about most weeks... and that is actually a good thing. Whenever I stop to think about how tired I am, I take a deep breath and think about how fortunate I am to be here in this place, surrounded by Amazing people who love and care for me. I'm just so fortunate to have so many quality people in my life. I was running the other night and I noticed that everything I was wearing had been given to me by someone. I'm just so grateful to all of the compassionate, kind and giving people who have checked in on me and given me things I needed without asking for anything in return. That is true friendship <3 This week at the Spa helped reinforce the good in my life. Every week lately has been a great experience, where I had several clients rebook with me and I left the Spa feeling like I had made an impression on their life. That is what makes it all worth while. It's that connection between Therapist and Client, the exchange of energy that casts out pain and darkness and brightens our life. Another great thing that happened this week, that was both exciting and bittersweet, was the Graduation of our Morning Class at Body Mechanics. It's the first Morning class after my own Graduating class and it just brought everything full circle for me, as I was able to partake in the Bead Exchange and Ceremony as a Licensed Massage Therapist and Staff Member rather than a Student. This Class was exceptional in so many ways... They were kind, compassionate, empathetic, skilled, knowledgable, curious and collaborative, just to name a few of the ways they stood out and touched my life. It was a large class so I wasn't able to get to know all of them on a personal level, but I did get to know several of them pretty well as I learned the details of their life journey, and their plans for the future, as I received massage from them and spent every day talking with them, encouraging them and getting to know their unique and fun personalities. I was so touched at how they included me in their bead exchange, which is a very intimate tradition that happens at Graduation, where each student and staff member picks out a specific bead that reflects their personality. They take turns walking around the room, speaking about the meaning of the bead they chose, their journey through massage school, and how its impacted and changed them. It's a very intimate tradition for the students to reflect on their time together before guests show up and the ceremony begins. The students all got me a special bead and glass cup with a personal message on it. It was so meaningful to be included in their special day!
This week I also spent the second evening of my Yoga series learning about the Vata Dosha, which is my dominant Dosha. The Vata Dosha is made up of Air and Ether(space) elements, which means that this type of person spends most of their time in the clouds, going with the flow of things, being creative and moving about independently in their own space. They are energetic, creative and flexible, as well as irregular, rough, flowing, spacious, cold, light and dry. It also means they have a hard time sitting still and feeling grounded and solid in their decisions; because of this they tend to worry, be indecisive and full of anxious thoughts. We spent a lot of the class trying to center and ground our thoughts through Mindfulness Meditation, as well as doing quite a few poses that help with digestion, since the Vata Dosha are prone to have digestion issues. It was a great class, as the Instructor went around to each of us with a Reika Prong, which she would place on a specific Chakra point, while also giving each of us a little shoulder adjustment. It's hard for me to sit still during a low impact session, but I'm always surprised at how relaxed I feel after a Restorative Yoga Class. To be honest, it was a welcome change from the running around I've been doing lately. Sitting still and focusing on my breathing and connecting mind and body is a great way to reflect on the gift of life. We also spent some time using massage balls on our feet and calves, moving them around with some Essential oil and then focusing on specific points of tension. We did all of this while sipping 'savor the moment' tea and then placing fuzzy socks on our feet. We used quite a few props in class again, including a chair, blocks, blankets and massage balls. It's like a mini retreat, to be with like-minded people while spending time away from the outside world. I will miss the next class which will focus on the Pitta Dosha, but will be back for the last Kapha Dosha class, which is my least dominant Dosha. The contrast will be fun to explore!
