Massage; A Sensory Experience!

I wanted to share some thoughts about this weekend and some of the experiences that touched me in a very emotional way. I noticed that when I’m fully present in a moment, time seems to stand still and even ceases to exist in a way. I saw a lot of clients over the weekend, several repeats, and one thing that a client said to me really stuck; she told me,

“I know it’s your job, but I really appreciate you.”

Not a lot of people take the time to speak from the heart and let each other know how we’ve touched each others lives. I could tell by the way she spoke, that I had made a very real impact in her life at that moment, helping her with the stress and pain she was feeling. I think, so many times, people feel like they have to feel the massage in a painful way, in order for it to be beneficial; but many times, people just need a break from life. They need that hour or two of time to quiet their minds, and have someone listen to them, help manage their pain and touch their lives in an empathetic and caring way. During a massage, many people let down their guard and start talking about things in their life that have left an indelible mark. Often times, the part of the brain that focuses on deep meditation and mindfulness is opened up and people start talking about memories that they had kept locked inside for many years.

I had one woman describe a very sensory experience she had. She talked about fire tending stones and using an ancient drum that she had made out of wood and horsehide. She did a lot of walking among nature, taking in her surroundings, as though everything around her was a part of her breath; a living organism with lungs of its own. The things she saw were a message that the Universe understood her life’s journey, and that she was open and ready to receive it. She talked about a swarm of bees that came out of nowhere and seemed to float around her, not stinging, but sort of observing her, as she hiked Mount Shasta. Another time a flock of birds came to roost in a tree above her, as she tended the stones of the fire, among new-fallen snow. Another time she felt the presence of a man wandering in the woods before she ever saw him, as though he had tapped an invisible bubble that surrounded her. These experiences were described in a very tangible way… like you can reach out and touch them, though they had happened years ago.

Some days you can really tell when you’ve left an impression on someones life. Like the time you give a friend a hug, rub their shoulders and listen to whats troubling them. When you smile and laugh over a drink and all your worries seem so far away… When you’re so tired that you dance; your spirit still alive inside you! These are the moments that stick with you through the hard days, the long days, the sad and lonely days, the days you are unsure, the days you are worried, the days that don’t make sense. During these days, a kind word can raise you up, cause you to smile or walk a little taller. That’s what I feel when I receive a massage; all the wrong things become right again, and fade into nothingness.

What makes your day better? Share your thoughts <3
